When it comes to addiction the ramifications are quite serious. Often physical, mental, and or legal challenges begin to play havoc in the life of the addicted. Family issues often become the focus. Divorce, resentment, and blame penetrate the family structure. When addiction rears its ugly head in a family who is to blame?
The short answer is no one is to blame, however, without an explanation this seems like a cop-out. Addiction is considered a disease according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). Although there are many opinions when it comes to the disease concept, researchers continue to attempt to isolate a genetic connection, hereditary theories abound, an allergy, a symptom of a mental illness, a response to trauma, and more. Of course there are those that will scream from the hill tops that addiction is not a disease as well.
However, the truth is simple, ask anyone that is recovered from this hideous malady and you will discover one thing they will all report that once they picked up a drink or a drug they could not predict their future with any certainty. With this in mind and the addiction fields belief in the disease concept the fact of the matter is simple addiction is a primary condition. Addiction is not a choice. There is no blame. We must recognize the need for full responsibility for our actions but the idea that we need to blame someone or something on our addiction is counter productive.
The bright side is incredible. The bright side is that people can and do recover from addiction if they simply do the work. If you or a loved one is suffering from addiction call for help now. 888-345-7505
