Are Drug and Alcohol Rehab Costs Covered by Oxford Insurance?
When making the choice to go to rehab, it is important to know if your health insurance will cover your stay there. A person who has been through rehab does not want to find out at home, weeks later, that their treatment was not covered and that it might be necessary to pay for all the costs out-of-pocket.
Rehabilitation treatment for substance abuse can be expensive, but many health insurance companies do have some kind of coverage for rehab, whether it is in-patient or out-patient.

Oxford Insurance Covers Rehab Costs
While you should always check with your insurance company beforehand, Oxford Health Insurance does cover rehabilitation costs. In general, most Oxford Health Management Organization (or HMO) or Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans give some kind of coverage for inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment. This treatment often includes the cost of detoxification. For example, the HMO plan as of 2010 covered 60 inpatient days including 7 days of detoxification and 30 days of inpatient rehabilitation. This restriction was for one plan year. The HMO plan also covered 60 visits of outpatient rehabilitation for substance abuse for one calendar year. Each calendar year gives you a new allowance of visits; in other words, there is only a maximum of visits per year, not per lifetime of the policy.
Within Oxford, Plans Cover Different Aspects
In contrast, one version of Oxford’s PPO from 2011 covered only 30 days of inpatient care and required a $40 co-pay for each out-patient care visit. You could also only go to an in-network facility, so if your facility was not in-network, you would have to pay all the costs by yourself.
However in another plan, Oxford paid 100% of treatment at a facility so long as pre-treatment certification was obtained before the first visit.
Know Your Plan, Find a Facility, and Get Well
When trying to get help for a substance abuse problem, a person does not often think about the resources that can aid in their recovery. Insurance companies can make the cost of treatment affordable and make your recovery easier by you knowing that you will not have to pay for the entire treatment yourself. Each insurance plan is different so you should call your health care provider or your HR representative to determine your exact benefits.
