Equine assisted activities can be part of a holistic recovery program
“Therapeutic Riding” originated in Germany as a means to treat various orthopedic conditions. The physician would team with a physiotherapist and a horse trainer, over a one year period, to address the patients’ strength and condition. In the 1990’s The Netherlands introduced a slightly different form of equine therapy known as “wagon-bed riding.”
The concept of Equine Therapy soon caught on in the United States as the “Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International” (PATH Intl.) was formed. PATH Intl. provides a wide range of services for those with disabilities. “The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association” (EAGALA) was formed with a focus more on the mental health potential of Equine Therapy.
