Substance abuse, the substance can be alcohol, illicit drugs, non-medical use of prescription drugs or inhalant abuse. Just as the substance varies, the abuser varies, they can be a mother, father, brother, sister, child.
Those who abuse any or all of these substances are still in control, their mind and body is not dependent and they can cease use physically at any time yet choose not to. They enjoy the high and the lifestyle that goes along with it. Although they are constantly in control they may find themselves making foolish choices resulting in legal troubles, loss of employment leading to financial troubles, as well as physical, social, and psychological harm.
Regardless, if the abuser is addicted they may require the assistance of a treatment program to successfully stop using the substance(s). Therapy can help them get to the cause of the abuse and give them the tools they need to get and remain sober.
